This past weekend I got the chance to go to Portland, Oregon and mentor under one of my favorite photographers, Bethany Small Photography. She was the photographer that I hired to shoot my wedding last August and she did a seriously amazing job! We have very similar styles, so it was really fun to see how she shoots in comparison to me and learn from one another. She is definitely someone that I look up to as a Boise wedding photographer.
Bethany’s sister and brother-in-law came and modeled for us and seriously rocked it! They are absolutely gorgeous and so outgoing and fun to be around, so photographing them was a dream! When they smiled and laughed the entire group started to smile and laugh. As a photographer I love to be able to make the experience fun for everyone and not an awkward or miserable. That is part of the reason that I love to shoot couples! When you are with your best friend it is so much easier to be yourself and relax, rather than being alone in front of the camera.
We started the session at Barista coffee in downtown Portland. Of course I had to start with a coffee- that is a necessity in my life. There was gorgeous lighting coming through the window, so we photographed them through the front window before going outside. The houses around NW 23rd Ave in downtown Portland are seriously amazing! You will see some staircases and some vine walls that were just down the street from Barista. I love exploring with my couples and getting a variation in the location and even outfit variations to change up the look of the session! We didn’t have to go very far at all to get several very different looks.
I want to extend a huge thank you to Bethany Small for spending the morning with me and answering all of my crazy questions about her journey in photography. Photography is a never-ending learning process and I eat it up! I love to spend my free time trying to grow and become the best that I can be for my clients.
